Golf on the Algarve Portugal
Located on the southernmost point of Portugal is the beautiful Algarve region. The area welcomes more than seven million tourists a year, and thanks to its comfortable Mediterranean weather, the Algarve is a favorite spot for golf travelers.
The comfortable climate sees an average yearly temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, making golf trips in summer or winter possible. Unlike in northern Europe, golfers won’t have to experience cold, wet weather that prevents them from taking to the course. Meanwhile, pleasant summers means players won’t have to battle the heat and pounding sun to play a round.
The region is easy to reach thanks to Faro Airport located in the Algarve capital of Faro. Many of the United Kingdom’s airports fly direct to Faro on budget and non-budget carriers; and travelers can be teeing off just a few short hours after taking to the skies.
There are over 35 golf courses in the Algarve to choose from, and golfers heading to the southern Portuguese region will be blessed with an abundance of choice. Many of the courses dot the coastline, and players will get to experience beautiful beach and mountain scenery.
Popular golf resorts on the Algarve include Vale do Lobo, Penina Golf, Pine Cliffs, Amendoeira, Quinta do Lago and the Pestana Golf Resorts. Many of these courses are located close to the beaches, overlooking sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean which pairs well with the lush greenery.
Morgado Golf Course is another beauty, and it is the new home of the European Tour’s Portuguese Open. It has world-class facilities and golfers can experience just what it is like to play on a real Tour event course. Vale do Lobo Ocean and Vale do Lobo Royal are two of the most unique golf courses in Europe. The greens over look beaches and players can feel the sea air press against their skin as they sink putts.
Perhaps the most popular of all Algarve golf destinations is Vilamoura. The resort town in the central part of the Algarve is an attractive venue for golf, shopping and dining. Vilamoura offers luxurious options for travelers. The private resort isn’t traditional Algarve, but what it lacks in tradition, it makes up for in its ability to provide first-class holiday comfort.
As a golf holiday destination, Vilamoura is one of the places that true golf aficionados must experience. The town boasts six championship quality golf courses. What makes these courses all exclusive is golfers must be able to show a handicap certificate to play. Vilamoura’s top-rated golf resort is the Victoria course. Laid out over mostly flat ground, this 18-hole course was designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, and it is home to the Portugal Masters. The Millennium golf course is set amongst a parkland of pine trees. The course hosts a variety of competitions throughout the year thanks to its championship quality management.
Away from the tee boxes and putting greens of the golf courses are a variety of great activities. Vilamoura is home to two beaches that provide golfers a sunny escape when they aren’t playing a round. The beaches are perfect for families and allow dad, or mum, the chance to play 18-holes during the day. Praia da Marina and Praia da Falesia are the resort town’s two beaches; and both offer fun in the sun to visitors.
A night out in Vilamoura wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the resort’s casino. Visitors can try their luck at a number of games or just relax in the casino’s bar. The town has plenty of delicious restaurants that serve up traditional Portuguese seafood. Vilamoura provides a number of great food and drink options that golfers will love as they refuel for their next round of golf on one of Vilamoura’s gorgeous courses.
